Sex Ed in St. Vrain Schools

It matters who wins elections, and here's another example...

Reacting to a new state law that requires teaching of contraception and sexually transmitted diseases sponsored by Rep. Nancy Todd (D-Aurora) and signed by Gov. Ritter, the St. Vrain Valley School District is taking steps to implement a revised and considerably expanded sex education curriculum. According to a Channel 7 News report the first lesson was recently given to the school board and featured a "demonstration with male and female anatomical models and the proper use of birth control and contraceptives."

I'll leave it to you to figure out precisely what they are demonstrating on the models.

Todd defends her legislation that mandated this latest assault on parental rights and sexual responsibility by explaining, "we should make sure our students are well informed. We want that in every other subject, why wouldn't we want it in human sexuality?"

Well, for one thing, our students are not being "well informed" in the basic core curriculum. Parents wish our schools could spend valuable time accomplishing the basics of what they send them to school for in the first place. Furthermore, sex education includes a lot more than biology and contraception. It involves moral responsibility, values, religious beliefs, and virtues that are and should be proprietary to parents. While some are willing to subordinate that responsibility to surrogates like the schools, it certainly isn't the masses of parents who suffer continual intrusion by the schools and the culture on their rights and ability to guide the moral development of their children. It's a war out there!

Jim Pfaff of the Colorado Family Institute called the new legislation "wrong-headed" and said, "We are throwing our hands up and saying, 'Well, they're going to do it anyway, let's show them how.'"

We elect representatives to make sure our roads are paved, neighborhoods are safe, and our freedom is protected. Some of them mistakenly believe they are elected to "represent" us as parents, too. They are not, and we need to let them know that at the ballot box.

Bob,
I am going to be looking ath the state boe rules on sex ed. I am working with a legislator right now to propose that we treat sex ed like drivers ed. It is incument upon the parent to find or provide training and information that fits for their family. I am looking at available online courses etc that parents could access. IF schools must have proof that a student completed a course for credit, then we will ensure that a certificate of completion is issued through the courses parents may choose. By taking on the responsibility that is theirs in this arena, it will help to open up discussions on values and virtues that a parent wishes to convey to a child on what may be to some, an uncomfortable topic. Your thoughts?

Peg

PS: Thanks for your assistance on our other project. It seems that it is impossible to speak to the wind. I am afraid that the 'pride comes before a fall' principle is about to take effect.
