In Support of a Good and Decent Public Servant
Bob Beauprez

For eighteen months a good and decent career public servant, Cory Voorhis, has been put through a personal agony by the government he had taken an oath to serve. He was charged as a criminal, removed from his job without pay, suffered character attacks, and endured a personal agony that no one can possibly understand.  On April 9, 2008 a jury of his peers found Cory Voorhis not guilty of the charges brought against him.

A Letter to the Hon. Bob Beauprez

CORY VOORHIS
April 11, 2008

Hon. Bob Beauprez
Lafayette, Colorado

Dear Mr. Congressman,

I am writing this letter as a follow up to our telephone conversation earlier on the morning of Thursday, April 10, 2008.

First, allow me to thank you for the lovely flowers that you and your wife thoughtfully sent to my home yesterday.  I passed along your wife, Claudia’s, expression of sympathy and support for my wife Paula who was grateful that the two of you recognized the impact of the events of the past eighteen months on our family.

Next, I would like to take this opportunity to make a clear record that when we spoke over the telephone I conveyed a message reflecting my belief that I owed you both an apology and a debt of gratitude.

The apology is only appropriate, in my view, because I have felt that the nature of our contact and relationship through a third party in the fall of 2006 was mistakenly described as my being a confidential informant for you or members of your campaign.  My view of the relationship and situation has always been that it was I who utilized the opportunity of your involvement in the public debate about immigration matters to expose what I perceived as a dangerous public policy.  The policy posed a significant threat and danger to public safety through plea agreements with dangerous criminal foreign nationals, negotiated for the purpose of avoiding immigration consequences for criminal aliens.  It was my understanding then, and is now, that you too shared my concerns regarding this important matter.  Therefore, I apologize to you for utilizing you, your office and staff, and the ongoing public debate to expose this dangerous policy.  I also appreciate your insistence that you were pleased to be involved in the effort to bring this dangerous policy to an end.

The debt of gratitude I owe you is profound.  Thank you for having the strength, courage and selflessness to weather, in complete silence, a protracted attack on your personal character and reputation for a perceived lack of support for me over the last 18 months.  I know that you kept silent, and did not answer your critics solely because you feared that by returning their fire, by appearing to be an advocate for me, you would risk portraying me as something I never was - - a political activist, advocating for you or your party.
